Corpus Christi, Texas — Desalination, which removes salt from seawater for residential and industrial use, is a salty problem for environmentalists.
And when they gave a three-hour presentation to the city council on Wednesday, they weren’t convinced, even though the Corpus Christi Water Department reassured them that such plants wouldn’t hurt.
“Nothing they said today to satisfy us that desalination in a closed bay system is a good idea,” said Errol Summerlin of the Coalition to Protect Our Environment.
City council members received information about two potential desalination plants in La Quinta Channel and Corpus Christi Harbor.
Water utility leaders state that salt emissions from plants do not significantly change the salt content of water in Corpus Christi Bay and therefore do not pose a danger to marine life.
Gil Hernandez, Councilor of District 5, believes that science is accurate.
“Salt is already in the bay and already in the sea. You really aren’t doing that,” he said.
Hernandez is concerned about the price of the plant, which he fears will eventually be passed on to taxpayers for utility bills.
Both proposals cost more than $ 200 million to build and millions more to operate and maintain. Therefore, Hernandez wants the city and Corpus Christi Port to continue researching groundwater and other water sources as well as desalination plants.
“I don’t want to close the door to something,” he said. “If we can diversify our water supply, let’s diversify. Let’s look at all possible options, ultimately at the best price.”
Environmentalists who believe that the city’s science is flawed agree with Hernandez.
“I think the city council needs to consider other alternatives,” said Patrick Nye, Ingleside of Bay Coastal Watch.
The seawater desalination plant has not been approved by the city or properly licensed.
