Palm Springs, CA (KESQ) — Tonight’s News Channel 3 exclusively learned that a man visiting the valley had collapsed and died in the record heat of last week.
55-year-old Geoffrey-Martin Cyr visited Palm Springs on the weekend. In a photo shared by a friend, he was seen relaxing by the pool on Friday afternoon, where they said he slept for over an hour.
The heat of the day set a record for Palm Springs: 119 degrees Celsius, one of the hottest days of the year so far.
Jill Langham, a Palm Springs-based friend of Cyr, planned to meet him for a drink.
She shared a text message from his walk to the bar. This is the last thing she has heard from him. “… it’s very winding! I’ll explain when I meet you,” read a message. “Pave the way for a hunter! See you again.”
Langham said he fell down on the street on the way. A friend said he sent them a text message that Cyr had thrown several times. Witnesses said he saw him hit the pavement before becoming unresponsive.
Paramedics said his organs failed because his blood pressure dropped – extreme heat stroke.
“His temperature was 105 degrees,” Langham said. “They couldn’t cool his body and he died on Saturday night.”
And while there were obvious signs that a friend could pick it up, medical professionals said there were other symptoms that people should be able to recognize both themselves and others.
“Dizziness, lightheadedness, malaise, upset stomach, vomiting, headaches,” said Dr. Timothy Wrap of JFK Memorial Hospital.
Sill’s loved ones help others stay safe during the desert summer, hoping that one less person will fall into tragedy due to the dangerous and deadly heat of the valley. Said he was speaking out.
“I believe this could have been prevented … it’s killing my heart,” Langham said. “If you’re weak and tired, I don’t know if it’s time to take a walk or go to the pool.”
